When the World Plays Here: Sports Law at the 2026 FIFA World

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first tournament hosted across three countries, and it arrives in Los Angeles between two match days at a moment when international sports law has never been more intricate. When the world plays here, every participant, the national teams, federations, sponsors, agents, broadcasters, and players, is operating inside a legal framework that crosses jurisdictions, governing bodies, and commercial regimes that were not designed to work together.

This SLA Event brings together practitioners across the disciplines that converge during a worldwide event of this scale. The panel will work through the practical questions that arise when a global tournament intersects with local law. Topics may include cross-border movement of athletes, staff, and federations across the three host countries, FIFA's regulatory framework and its interplay with national federation authority, sponsorship and commercial rights protection in a tournament known for aggressive IP enforcement, cross-border tax and compensation issues for participants earning income across jurisdictions, dispute resolution pathways from the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and the data privacy, match integrity, and sports betting regimes operating across the three host countries. The final panel will shape specific topics and the depth of coverage.

Featured panelist will include:
Richard M. Wilner, Board Certified Specialist in Immigration and Nationality Law (State Bar of California) and Shareholder at Wilner & O'Reilly
